Statement on the Canadian Senators Group
Monday, November 4, 2019
I was appointed to the Senate to represent Saskatchewanians and I will always speak on behalf of those whose voices have too often been left unheard.
Being part of the Canadian Senators Group will allow me to better serve the people of my region and fulfil my obligation to offer constructive assessments of the legislation that comes before us. And I will continue to relentlessly advocate on issues that matter to my province, such as agriculture and energy resources and on policies ranging from national security, to veterans health to advanced directives.
I look forward to working with senators who respect the fact that our work as parliamentarians will always require compromise and an understanding of the political environment and who know that different political and regional perspectives are necessary when scrutinizing legislation.
For the Senate to be truly effective, and to work as it was originally intended, Senators must be a check on the majority. The Canadian Senators Group will help move us toward genuine Senate reform and will help ensure the Senate functions effectively as a parliamentary institution.
We all have our own reasons for joining the Canadian Senators Group. But what we all agree on is that we each must be free to express our concerns and perspectives and help educate each other about this vast country.
For me, and that is exactly why this group needs to exist.
